BOXCAR Speedway Debut: To celebrate a decade of serving up San Diego Craft Beer, we decided to create an extremely special beer in collaboration with the brewery that kicked off our love of homebrewing, and that has been a major part of our history from day one – AleSmith Brewing Company. After brainstorming with Peter Zien we decided on a Barrel-Aged Speedway variation that would add layers, depth, complexity, and a little heat to this already unique beer. This beer is the collaborative effort of elite brewers, judges, roasters, and passionate industry compatriots. The name BOXCAR came second and is a nod to the old railcars, whose tracks cut around the AleSmith brewery.

Why this beer is special:

The Coffee:
Swell Coffee Co. supplied us with a unique blend of ultra premium Columbian & Burundi coffees, designed to hold up to the strength of this beer, while imparting their own nuanced flavor characteristics.

25% Peaberry grade coffee from Kayanza, Burundi in Africa. Peaberry grade coffee is produced from a natural mutation of the bean inside the cherry, where only a single bean is present inside the cherry providing a denser, sweet, and flavorful coffee.
Tasting Notes: Peach & Butterscotch

75% Finca La Virgen de Oro from Antioquia, Columbia, this is a true Estate coffee meaning it’s beans are milled and packed at the farm, unlike any other Columbian coffee.
Tasting Notes: Strawberry, Floral, Sweet Pepper, & Molasses.

The Chilies:
We used a blend of Hatch & Mulato chilies to further add to the complexity of this beer while contributing a touch of back end heat. The Hatch chilies provide a sweet earthiness, while the Mulato Chilies contribute notes of chocolate, cherry, & tobacco.

Cocoa Nibs & Vanilla Beans:
BoxCar was also aged on Brazil Forastero Cocoa Nibs and a healthy dose of Bourbon Madagascar Vanilla beans, which accentuate the sweeter, complex, whiskey character.

A host of resources, time, & passion went into the making of this collaboration, which we believe come through in the finished product. We are humbled to finally be able to share this project with everyone. Cheers from AleSmith & TapRoom team, enjoy!

Framboise de AmorosaLost AbbeySour Brown Ale w/ raspberries aged in Red Wine barrels, sweet, sour, oak finish7.00%10
This beer begins as Lost and Found ale and is sent into freshly emptied red wine barrels. The beer spends over a year in the wood during which time it is spiked with three additions of raspberries. The first sip produces a sweet start with a long drawn out sour finish. So of the sweetnewss from the raspberries comes out before acidic notes join the mix. On the back end of the beer is a smoothing oak character which keeps the beer from becoming dull.
Red PoppyLost AbbeySour Brown Ale w/ sour cherries & poppy seeds5.00%10
100 on RateBeer. Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.
Funk-n-DeliciousOceanside AleworksSpontaneously fermented sour ale aged in wine barrels w/ organic peaches6.20%10
Funk-n-Delicious Peche is a Belgian style blonde ale, spontaneously fermented with wild airborne yeast. It is then transferred into Gwerztremainer barrels for a secondary fermentation, of which Brettanomyces is the majority. This “Brett” gives the beer its distinct “funky” characteristic. Once the “Velo de Flor”of yeast drops into suspension, it is transferred into Johannesburg Riesling barrels with organic peaches to age, until the desired balance of “funk” fruit and filigree is achieved. Enjoy!
Woofle DustCouncilFoeder Aged American Golden Sour Ale6.00%10
The Woofle Dust (magical dust) that lives in the Magic Factory settled into this special foeder, transforming the light biscuit base into a vibrant expression of fruit flavors. The power flashes with each sip of this golden sour ale revealing layers of pineapple, guava, peach, and pear. The foeder’s oak tannins and vanilla come through to round out the mouthfeel and provide a spellbinding experience. We captured some woofle dust in this bottle to let it continue to work its magic over time.

Roes RedPure ProjectGABF medal-winning Flanders Red aged in Pinot barrels7.00%10
A Flanders Red named after the Belgian town of Roeselare where the style originally developed. This style is near and dear to Winslow’s heart after living in Bordeaux, reminding him of Belgian Beer bars in the area. This red features a strong cherry aroma and a complex malt background of dark aged fruits and leather over the sour lactic bite and acetic notes. The complexity of this beer is driven by the yeast. The yeast is Winslow’s proprietary blend containing multiple sachro, brett, pedio, lacto, and acetic strains, with Belgian origins. Following almost a decade of selection, and surviving a fire in the cellar below, this yeast has become its own unique blend designed specifically to work well in light bodied, fruity red wine barrels. The barrels used to age this beer are French Oak and were previously used to hold Pinot Noir in Napa Valley.
